9.      The gift of Silas Chittenden to the poor of Plaxtol Borough is ten loaves of good wheate bread of the value of one shilling each to ten poor families on the first Sunday in November.   Twenty other such loaves to poor families of the said borough on the 5th day of January following, and ten other  such loaves to the poor of the said borough on the first Sunday in March.   Also two Testaments of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ to two different families of the said borough every year, fore ever.  NB. The above gift is the interest of Twenty Pounds placed in the 3 per cent consols in the name of Rev’d Richard Knowles and Francis Martin

22.  Here lyeth ye body of Dorothy, wife of Silas Chittenden of this place.   She departed this life March ye 29th 1746.Age 35.    Also here lyeth the bodys of 3 children who died infants.   To the Loving Memory of Ann, second wife of Silas Chittenden of this place.   She was the only child of Francis and Ann Baldwin, who departed this life 17th Sep 1763,  Age 4?.

“The Chittenden Charity was known as the ‘Beer and Bibles Charity’ and was held to be for the distribution of beer and bibles, but it was really for ‘ten good wheaten loaves’.   When I asked about it in my more revolutionary days I was told by somebody ‘Keep your trap shut’ is is said that the money was in the care of Richard Knowles of this Parish from 1778 and I can now understand why you think it was beer and bibles.   Your ancestors drunk the beer and none of it went on bibles!!!’.
