HEARTH
TAX
Note: The hearth tax was introduced in 1662, ‘it being easy to tell the number of hearths, which remove not as heads or polls do.’ Each hearth was taxed at the rate of two shillings a year, payable in two instalments at Lady Day and Michaelmas. Its unpopularity led to its abolition after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 |
