James
Awdry married the governess Katharine Chittenden,
working at the family home Norton House in Wiltshire. It was a great scandal in the family and
they were made to wait before marrying and then came to New Zealand, circa
1877, soon after their marriage. They
lived in Marton and the their daughter Amy Sarah
married James, son of Robert’s son William Hamilton |
