Chittenden Edward (ag lab) and Lydia arrived in Wellington on the “Gertrude”.   They were both age 33, no children, from Monkton, Isle of Thanet.   New Zealand Company settlers (probably free passage) NZ Co records:  Application No. 3004, Embarcation Register page 89, Emb. No. 1295

Obituary   “Chittenden Walter Ernest (1873-1952)  died 1952 Kakaramea, age  79, born Wairau Valley  Blenheim 1873, son of Mr & Mrs Dan Chittenden, survived by wife Evelyn Ann (Parsons), marr. 57 years, and 14 of 16 children, he was in Railways, farming, dancing master, in Hawkes Bay, Napier & Taranaki

Chittenden  Mrs Ferol, death Palmerston North.  Violinist and Music Teacher, one son Brian.

 

James Awdry married the governess Katharine Chittenden, working at the family home Norton House in Wiltshire.   It was a great scandal in the family and they were made to wait before marrying and then came to New Zealand, circa 1877, soon after their marriage.   They lived in Marton and the their daughter Amy Sarah married James, son of Robert’s son William Hamilton
