LI List of Creditors:    Chittenden John, Hawkhurst, Clothier & Merchant. deceased John Chittenden, late of Hawkhurst.  Bankrupt:  Declaration signed 16th October 1765.  Final Dividend 9/10/1765 at rate of eight shillings and sixpence farthing in the pound.   Total number of creditors 180.   Total owed to creditors 9,266 pounds, 6 shillings and ninepence farthing.   Total dividend paid to creditors 3,947 pounds, fourteen shillings and threepence.      Creditor Thomas Chittenden, amount of debt 9 pounds, fifteen shillings.      Dividend received 4 pounds 3 shillings and three farthings.   Creditor William Beney, amount of debt 17 pounds seventeen shillings eleven pence and one halfpenny.  Dividend 7 pounds twelve shillings fivepence and three farthings.

Ref. 21BAG   Vol 2, page 631.          Chittendens owned property in Lilsden during the reign of Queen Elizabeth  (1558 - Mar 1603) and they  were clothiers. Lilsden was a manor in the Parish of Hawkhurst.

1812 Dec 4th    Bankrupt Directory 1820 - 1843.       Ref. No. U229B5-18.   Assignment, John Franks Chittenden.  Messrs William Ward and Thomas Wright, of all effects, in trust, to be sold with letter of Attorney to receive his debts for the benefit of his creditors and their release to him.  24th Dec 1812 (Also mentioned in document: Thomasine, George and Ann Chittenden, all of Sittingbourne).

1830 Jan 16th   Ref:  P371. 28/2          Extracts from Tonbridge Parish Catalogue:                                      Marriage. Henry Chittenden, bach of Brenchley & Sarah Downing, widow @ Tonbridge Parish Church. Baptism.  1836Aug 30th  Henry  son of   Henry & Sarah Chittenden, Brenchley, Farmer.         Burial.  Parish of   Brenchley.  1842 Jan 12th  HenryChittenden, age 58 years.   Ceremony performed by Stephen Woodgate, Vicar.    “I hereby certify   that the above is a true copy from the register book of burials of the Parish of Brenchley”.       Witness my  hand 10th Sep 1835.        George S. Woodgate, Vicar. Declaration of family relationship sworn before Master of Chancery:  “I William Chittenden of Matfield  Green in the Parish of Pembury,  in the County of Kent,  farmer, do solomnly and sincerely declare as follows:-  That Henry Chittenden, late of Matfield Green, aforesaid, farmer, was my brother, and that the said Henry Chittenden on or about the 16th Day of January 1830 intermarried with Sarah Downing at Tonbridge, in the County of Kent and is the same person as is referred to in the certificate of marriage hereunto annexed, marked with letter A.         That there was issue of such marriage, one child only, namely a son  Henry, who was born in the month of August 1836 at Matfield Green aforesaid.             That I know and am well acquainted with the said  Henry Chittenden,  the son,  and he is the same person as Henry, t he son of Henry and  Sarah Chittenden named in the paper writing hereunto annexed and marked with the letter B.  That the said Henry Chittenden,  the Elder,  who was never previously or subsequently married to any other person,  died on or about    the 8th January 1842,  intestate, leaving the said Henry Chittenden, the younger, him surviving, his sole heir at law according to the custom of Kent, and that the said Henry Chittenden, the elder, above mentioned, is the same person as the Henry Chittenden mentioned in the paper writing hereunto annexed marked with the letter C.   And I make this solomn declaration conscientously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the provisions……made out and passed in the sixth year of the reign of the late majesty King William !V.  Declared at Brenchley in the County ofof Kent this 13th day of September 1835 “ ???   Signed:  William Chittenden
